Paying monthly spreads the cost of a website into a small, predictable fee with hosting and upkeep included, so there is no large bill up front. Buying outright costs more at the start but less over time, and the site is yours from day one. Which is right comes down to cash flow and how long you will keep the site, not to which is “better”.
The Short Version
Both routes get you the same bespoke website. The only thing that changes is how and when you pay for it:
| Pay monthly | Buy outright | |
|---|---|---|
| Up front | Small setup fee (£300) | Full build cost (from £799) |
| Then | From £49.99/month, all-in | Hosting and upkeep arranged separately |
| Hosting, updates, backups | Included | Your responsibility, or a care plan |
| Ownership | Buy out any time at 12× the monthly fee | Yours from day one |
| Best if | You want to start now and keep costs predictable | You have the budget and want to own it outright |
If you are still weighing up what a website should cost in the first place, our guide to how much a website costs in the UK covers the wider picture. This article is about the two ways to pay for one.
How Paying Monthly Works
You pay a one-off setup fee, we design and build your site, and from launch you pay a fixed monthly fee that covers everything the site needs to stay online: hosting, SSL, software updates, security, daily backups and support. There are no separate bills from four different suppliers, and no surprise invoices when something needs attention.
It suits a business that wants a proper site without a large outlay, and that values one predictable figure over owning an asset outright. The trade is simple and we are upfront about it: over enough years, monthly adds up to more than a single payment would have. What you are buying is cash flow and peace of mind, not the cheapest possible total.
How Buying Outright Works
You pay for the build once, and the site is yours. For a brochure site that starts from £799; larger builds are quoted on scope. You then arrange hosting and ongoing maintenance yourself, or take a care plan so updates, backups and security are handled for you.
Owning outright makes sense when you have the budget to hand and you know the site will be around for years. The one thing to plan for is the running cost: a website is never truly “done”, and an owned site still needs hosting and upkeep. Budgeting nothing for that is the most common way a bought site quietly falls behind.
Which Works Out Cheaper?
Over a short period, paying monthly is cheaper because the up-front cost is tiny. Over a long enough period, buying outright wins because you stop paying once the build is covered, even allowing for hosting and upkeep. The crossover depends on the build cost and how long you keep the site, but as a rule of thumb, if you expect to keep the site well beyond a couple of years and can afford the up-front cost, outright is the lower total.
That is exactly why we offer a buy-out: pay monthly to get started, then buy the site outright whenever the sums tip in your favour, for twelve times the monthly fee. You are never locked into the more expensive route forever.
What You Do Not Give up Either Way
- The same site. Bespoke, native WordPress, built to the same standard. The payment model does not change the quality.
- Your domain. You own your domain name whichever route you choose.
- Your content. Your words and images are always yours.
- The ability to leave. On a rented site you can buy out and take it anywhere; an owned site is already portable.
The thing to be wary of with cheap monthly deals elsewhere is a site you can never actually own, built on a platform you cannot leave. That is renting a template, not paying monthly for a real site. Questions People Ask
Is it cheaper to pay monthly or buy a website outright?
Paying monthly is cheaper to start and buying outright is cheaper over the long run. The crossover depends on the build cost and how long you keep the site. If you can afford the up-front cost and expect to keep the site for several years, outright usually works out as the lower total, even once hosting and upkeep are added.
Can I buy my website later if I start on a monthly plan?
Yes. You can buy the site outright at any time for twelve times your monthly fee, and then it is yours to keep and host anywhere. You are never tied to the monthly route permanently.
What happens if I cancel a monthly website plan?
After the minimum term you can cancel with a month’s notice. You keep your domain and your content. If you want to keep the site itself, you buy it out; otherwise the hosted site is retired. Nothing you own is held hostage.
Does paying monthly mean a cheaper or lower-quality website?
No. It is the same bespoke, native WordPress site either way. The monthly fee is about how you pay, not what you get. The only difference between the two routes is the timing of the payments and who looks after hosting and upkeep.
